Polk County Love Story: Nevaeh & Wilson

Photography: Mae Clark

Some love stories begin with a grand gesture, but this one started with a hose clamp. Wilson and Nevaeh crossed paths during their senior year at Central Florida Aerospace Academy, bonded over a racing lawn mower project, and built something that would outlast high school, survive long distance, and span two branches of the military. From late-night phone calls to sprinklers at Duff Park, their relationship was woven from the kinds of quiet, ordinary moments that somehow become everything. Now, these two Lakeland natives — both air traffic controllers serving their country — are coming home to say "I do" right where it all began.

Couples Name: Nevaeh & Wilson Clark

Wedding date:  October 10, 2026

How did you meet two meet (from Nevaeh POV) :

Wilson and I both went to Central Florida Aerospace Academy for high school, and during our senior year, we met through mutual friends. I got invited to hang out with a group while we were working on turning a lawn mower into a racing lawn mower, and that’s honestly where it all started for us back in September 2022. I remember walking up to the garage and immediately noticing him and thinking he was really attractive, and then one of our friends said his name, and I literally made a mental note like “Wilson, that's his name.” Over the next month, we kept hanging out with that same group and eventually started talking on the phone almost every night, and that’s when I really got to know who he was and realized he was everything I could ask for in a partner and more. One of the first moments where I felt like he liked me back was at school when he was working on an aircraft project and had an extra hose clamp, and he brought it to me in the hallway and put it on my ring finger like a ring. It was such a small thing, but it stuck with me so much, and I still have that hose clamp to this day. I wore it all the time until we eventually got promise rings on our six-month anniversary at Nineteen61 in downtown Lakeland. Another early memory I love is the first time we held hands. We were riding in a friend’s truck, and I kept playfully high-fiving him over and over until eventually we just didn’t let go and ended up holding hands, which felt like a really big deal at the time. Around that same time, we also started doing scripture readings together before bed, and the very first time I showed him a passage I had gone over in my Bible study, his brother sent him that same passage at the same time, which just felt like too much of a coincidence not to mean something.

The first time we hung out one-on-one was right after Thanksgiving in 2022. We were supposed to go to Skate World with a group, but both of us kind of dragged our feet on inviting anyone else, and I was secretly hoping it would just be the two of us, which is exactly what happened. We didn’t even end up going because he was traveling back from Alabama and got delayed, so we went to Lake Mirror instead and just walked around and sat on a bench talking for hours. A few days later, on November 30, 2022, we officially started dating. After hanging out with friends at Lakeside Village, we were on the way back to my house, and I was basically trying to get him to just ask me already, and he was nervous and stalling, and I told him if the question was what I thought it was, the answer was yes, and he made me wait until we were in my driveway before finally asking. Three days later, we had our first kiss, and that same day was also our first official date at Saigon Bistro, where I spilled boba tea everywhere trying to poke the straw in, which we still laugh about. Not long after that we had one of my favorite memories at Duff Park where the sprinklers were running on the soccer field and Wilson just ran straight through them, grabbed my hand, and pulled me with him, and I remember laughing asking what he was doing and he just said “I’m on a mission,” and it’s one of those simple moments that just stuck with me. By Christmas, we had already said I love you. Wilson was going on a trip, so I wrote him a letter for every day he was gone with reasons why he’s my favorite person, and on Christmas Day, he opened that letter on FaceTime, read that I loved him, and said it back to me, so technically he said it first. We spent the rest of our senior year soaking up as much time together as we could before leaving for the military.

Coming from an aviation high school, we both already had an interest in aviation and ended up continuing that path, and now we’re both air traffic controllers in the military, Wilson in the Navy, and I in the Army. Since the summer of 2023, we’ve been doing long distance, which hasn’t been easy but has made us a lot stronger and more intentional with our time together.

How did you meet two meet (from Wilson's POV):

The first time I ever saw Nevaeh was in a statistics class in our sophomore year of high school. I remember seeing her occasionally in class and thinking she was beautiful, and as I was pretty antisocial, I never said a word to her. That was until the senior year of high school, when our groups of friends sorta kinda molded into one. We had plans to go watch a race at the Auburn Dale Speedway, but that ended up getting rained out, so we went to one of our friends' houses to work on some mowers we’d been screwing around with for the last month or so. I remember thinking, " Dang, she’s beautiful, but no way I’m talking to her”. I was far too nervous and thought I’d definitely screw it up. We ended up hanging out more, but I was still convinced I’d screw it up, so I tried keeping my distance. One night, our friend group went back to the speedway (it didn’t get rained out this time), where we went to get fries for a friend, and she was very adamant about coming with me. That’s where I first got the idea that maybe she liked me back. A few weeks later, I was coming back from Thanksgiving, and our friends had all planned on going to Skate World. Everyone ended up canceling, and I showed up so late that by the time I got there, Skate World was about to close. So Nevaeh and I decided to just drive around and find something to do. We ended up walking around Lake Mirror and ended up talking on a park bench for hours. After that, we ended up calling and doing scripture reading nightly, which is when I realized we’d go great together. We continued hanging out around downtown together almost nightly, conversing for hours. After a while, our friend group started to notice that we were getting closer and started asking if we were a thing. So on the way back from hanging out on the night of November 30th, I ended up mustering the courage to ask her out. She said yes before I even asked her. Our first official date was at some boba place in Lakeside Village, where my card declined (which may still be one of the most embarrassing things to ever happen to me). The next few months were hands down the best months of my life. Celebrated Christmas and our birthdays. Sadly, Nevaeh had to leave for boot camp shortly after my birthday on July 10th, 2023. I followed shortly, leaving on August 2nd. We’ve done long distance since then, and it hasn’t exactly been easy. I asked Nevaeh to marry me on November 26th, 2025, in Atmore, Alabama, where my grandparents live.

Tell us about the proposal:

Nevaeh: The proposal happened on November 26, 2025, and is something I’ll never forget. Earlier last fall, we took a trip to West Virginia, and I was convinced he was going to propose there, but he kept telling me it would be in the near future and to be patient, and that’s when I told him if the question he was planning to ask was what I thought it was, the answer would always be yes. His original plan was actually to propose during family beach pictures at sunset, but I didn’t get off work early enough to make it in time, so he had to completely pivot the plan that same day. On top of that, he had told me he wasn’t going to make it home for Thanksgiving, which obviously wasn’t true and was part of the surprise. During that same Thanksgiving trip, his family and I went to look at Christmas lights around town in Atmore, Alabama, and while we were at the train depot, he came up behind me out of nowhere and asked me the most important question, and of course, I said yes.

Wilson: I planned on surprising her on the beach in Destin and asking her there, but plans changed, and I asked her at the train depot in the small town that my mother’s side of the family has lived in for over 45 years. It was extremely nerve-racking, but the best moment of my life. Nevaeh has been with me through a lot, and I’m happy to soon call the most beautiful woman in the world my wife.
